The East Bay Rowing Club is a non-profit organization serving rowers, coxswains and coaches in Oakland and the broader East Bay area. We are based in the Jack London Aquatic Center, which is owned and operated by the City of Oakland. East Bay Rowing Club is committed to breaking down financial and social barriers that limit access to rowing. We dedicate ourselves to including people of color in our rowing programs, our staff and our leadership. Additionally, EBRC sponsors Oakland United Rowing, which is a high school rowing team open to ALL OUSD students. OUR is one of three public school rowing programs on the West Coast.


EBRC has a strong history of sending competitive and winning boats to Head of the Charles, San Diego Crew Classic, and USRowing National Championships. Our coaches include former Olympians and National Team rowers; EBRC is a great club to hone and grow your coaching skills to move onward in the rowing community to coach at the college or high performance level.

Executive Director

The East Bay Rowing Club in Oakland, CA is hiring a full-time Executive Director to oversee and coordinate the daily responsibilities of the East Bay Rowing Club’s mission and operations. The East Bay Rowing Club is a non-profit organization serving youth and adult rowers, coxswains and coaches in Oakland, California and the broader East Bay area. We are based in the Jack London Aquatic Center, which is owned and operated by the City of Oakland. East Bay Rowing Club remains committed to breaking down financial and social barriers that limit access to rowing. We dedicate ourselves to including people of diverse backgrounds in our rowing programs, our staff and our leadership. Our ultimate goal is a club where everyone feels a sense of belonging and pulls together to support the best within each other.


The responsibilities of this position focus on the daily club operations: managing the scheduling of programs, coaches, and members, tracking team progress, and directly supervising coaching staff. The Executive Director will also liaise with the Board of Directors to ensure communication and collaboration across the entire East Bay Rowing Club community.


Executive Director Responsibilities:

  • Manage the club’s rowing and outreach programs:
  • Hire, onboard, train and supervise all coaches.
  • Manage the schedule for coaches, staff, program practices, and regattas.
  • Communicate club-wide news regularly.
  • Coordinate outreach and volunteers for adult learn-to-row programs.
  • Coordinate with youth coaches for youth learn-to-row programs.
  • Management of EBRC’s business:
  • Work closely with coaches, the Board and its committees to develop and manage the annual budget.
  • Review coaching performance and perform annual reviews of all staff members.
  • Be responsible for facility management and equipment safety and maintenance:
  • Train and educate members, staff, and volunteers on equipment maintenance and USRowing safety protocols.
  • Serve as direct liaison with the City of Oakland, which owns and operates the Jack London Aquatic Center facility.
  • Arrange and coordinate boat transportation and trailer loading/unloading for regattas.
  • Arrange and coordinate travel and room and board accommodations for coaches and coxswains for travel events and regattas.
  • Member, Volunteer and Community Management:
  • Develop and strengthen members’ volunteer events and engagement opportunities.
  • Model an inclusive environment in words and actions that aligns with EBRC’s mission.
  • Coordinate with the Board of Directors and volunteer support to plan and execute community events for membership growth and fundraising.
  • Foster relationships and partnerships with local organizations that share similar missions.


Executive Director Requirements:

  • Legally able to work in the United States.
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in nonprofit administration or equivalent.
  • Experience developing and managing an organizational budget.
  • Established leadership and management skills.
  • Established volunteer management experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Project management and project management tools experience.
  • Ability to think tactically and dynamically for quick adaptations to changing circumstances.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • SafeSport certification within one month of hire date.
  • First aid & CPR certification within one month of hire date.

Compensation:

The position is identified as an exempt 40 hours per week FTE, not including events. Work hours are scheduled as flex time, excluding scheduled practice and monthly Board meetings, and include 10 days of paid vacation, National holidays, and up to 48 hours of paid sick leave.


Salary is set at $70,000-$90,000 yearly depending on experience.


Supervision:

The Executive Director has direct oversight from the Board of Directors, and reports to the Board President.

coaching positions for Masters and High school Teams

Our coaching positions focus on the seasonal and daily preparation and training of our Masters and/or Junior rowing programs: planning daily workouts, communicating with athletes, and tracking athlete attendance. Our Masters program includes four different squads: Novice (new rowers), Mixed Masters (recreational and intermediate-level rowers), Competitive Women, and Competitive Men. As of right now, we have about 170 Masters athletes as members of EBRC. As for OUR, the junior rowing program, we support men’s and women’s varsity teams and men’s and women’s novice teams. We recognize that not everyone has on-water coaching experience and we are more than happy to train interested coaches!


Practice Schedule

  • Masters team, morning practices run Monday through Friday from 5:20 AM-7:30 AM and Saturdays from 6 AM-9 AM
  • Junior team, afternoon practices run Monday-Friday from 4:30 PM-7 PM and Saturdays from 9:30 AM-12:30 PM
  • All teams practice both on the water in rowing shells and on land on rowing machines (ergs)
  • EBRC expects coaches to coach either both Masters and Juniors for a full-time position or only one team for a part-time position

Rowing Coach Responsibilities

  • Ensure a quality of experience consistent with club values and stated mission.
  • Prepare crews and athletes for national and regional competitions.
  • Communicate regularly with athletes about the training program and goals while understanding that there is a broad spectrum of needs, goals, and abilities
  • Recognize the challenges inherent in masters rowing (age, injury, flexibility, ingrained patterns, patience with learning, etc.)
  • Have a sense of humor, and be flexible, fair, and committed to developing the best rower in each athlete.
  • Contribute to and maintain a positive and supportive team culture that’s inclusive to all rowers.
  • Maintain awareness of community events and organizations.
  • Be responsible for some equipment maintenance and on-site and water safety protocols.


Coach Requirements

  • Legally able to work in the United States
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift/move heavy objects of 50 lbs or more.
  • Must obtain USRowing Level I Coaching certification prior to coaching practices
  • Must obtain USRowing Level II Coaching certification within 6 months of hire date
  • Must pass a background check & have SafeSport certification
  • First aid & CPR certification


Compensation and How to Apply

Base salary $22/hour and up, depending on qualifications. 15-40 hours per week
